The forward deployed engineer market in numbers

Key takeaways

  • As of 18 October 2026, Plank's public census counts 1,262 live forward deployed engineer jobs at 555 companies, and calls that a floor. Ten percent sit at the frontier labs and Palantir; the long tail is more than 500 companies with one or two openings each.
  • Demand is still climbing. Insight Partners put growth in the role at roughly 40x in 24 months, and Lightcast counted postings up more than 1,000% from January to August 2026 against the same months of 2025.
  • Supply hasn't kept up. Christian & Timbers estimates about 17,000 people in the broader US FDE market, and about 2,000 who've repeatedly turned enterprise AI deployments into documented business value.
  • Pay depends on which number you read. The median posted base is $200K (Plank), Indeed's average is $179,916, Levels.fyi's median total compensation is $220K, and Insight Partners puts a permanent FDE at $200K to $350K a year fully loaded.
  • Every figure here carries its source and an as-of date. The page is re-checked every quarter; the next refresh is January 2027.

Why this question matters

You need a number you can put in a hiring plan, a board deck or a job description, and the numbers in circulation disagree by close to a factor of two. Most of the disagreement is about units: postings or people, posted base or total pay, what an employee earns or what one costs. This page puts the current figures side by side with their sources and dates, so you can use the one that matches the decision in front of you. If you need the role defined first, start with what a forward deployed engineer is.

The frame: Read the unit before the number

Every FDE figure in circulation answers one of five questions, and most arguments about "the" number come from mixing two of them.

  1. How many jobs are open? A count of postings, which moves with how strictly the title is matched.
  2. How fast is demand growing? A growth rate, which moves with the base period and runs high on a title this young.
  3. How many people can do the work? A supply estimate, which moves with where the counter draws the line between title and capability.
  4. What does the role pay? A posted base, an advertised average, or a self-reported total that includes equity.
  5. What does one cost? A fully loaded figure that adds benefits, taxes, recruiting and overhead to pay, or a monthly rate if you rent the engineer instead.

The table sorts the current figures into those five questions. The sections after it explain what each source counts and where it's thin.

How many forward deployed engineer jobs are open?

About 1,260 live postings worldwide, at 555 companies, as of 18 October 2026. That's the most complete public count we found: Plank's census, which links every posting it counts and publishes the dataset openly. Plank is itself an FDE agency, and it calls its own figure a floor, roughly half the market under a strict title match.

The count swings by more than an order of magnitude depending on the match. Plank puts the strict "forward deployed engineer" title at 1,000 to 1,400 open roles worldwide and 650 to 885 in the US. FDE-titled variants take it to 1,500 to 2,000 globally. The broadest family of customer-embedded engineering roles clears 20,000. The census also flags that a LinkedIn search showing 56,000-plus results is matching any of the words rather than the title. When someone quotes a forward deployed engineer jobs figure, ask which match they ran. Title-based counts also pick up relabeling: when a company retitles existing solutions or implementation engineers as FDEs, the count rises without a new role being created.

About two-thirds of openings are in the US. Ten percent are at the frontier labs and Palantir, and outside the biggest employers, 543 companies account for 920 postings between them, one or two each. That fits Bloomberry's earlier analysis of 1,000 postings, where 58% sat at companies of 11 to 200 people.

For a buyer, the count is your competition: more than 500 companies, most of them small, recruiting from the same pool. For a job seeker, the census links each live posting.

How fast is FDE demand growing?

Fast, and still rising in late 2026 by every public measure we could check. Insight Partners' panel put growth in the role at roughly 40x in 24 months in July 2026. Lightcast data shared by Dice with Fortune had postings up more than 1,000% from January to August 2026 against the same months of 2025, and more than 4,600% against 2023.

Read the percentages for direction rather than size. A title this young starts from a small base, so a large multiple can describe a modest number of jobs. The posting counts in the previous section are the size. Bloomberry's 1,165% year-over-year figure is the earlier reading of the same curve, measured January to October 2025 against 2024.

Hiring intent moved faster than postings. The Christian & Timbers study reported by TechCrunch found 5 to 10% of companies planning FDE hires at the start of 2026 and 70% by the end of Q2. The study drew on interviews with more than 250 C-suite hiring executives at 180 companies, a survey of 80 Fortune 500 executives, and interviews with more than 300 FDEs and applied AI engineers between January and June 2026.

The first sign of the multiple easing comes from outside the US. Indeed data for India, reported by PTI via People Matters on 15 October 2026, had FDE postings nearly 19 times the prior year in June, nearly 16 times in July and over six times in August. Six times is still steep growth. It's also a third of June's multiple, and it's the number to watch in the US data at the January refresh.

How many forward deployed engineers are there?

About 17,000 people in the broader US FDE market, of whom about 2,000 have repeatedly turned enterprise AI deployments into documented business value. Both figures are from Christian & Timbers, published 14 August 2026, from the study described above.

The supply and posting counts aren't the same unit. Postings are worldwide and measure open roles at a point in time; the supply estimate is US people, including those already employed as FDEs. The ratio inside the supply figure is the one buyers feel: Christian & Timbers counts about one proven deployer for every eight people in the broader market. The title is also looser than the job. Bloomberry found 30% of FDE postings describing what was really a sales engineer role, and the one-paragraph test in the FDE definition guide covers how to tell the two apart.

The demand side is getting bigger per company, too. Christian & Timbers reports companies moving from pilot teams of two or three engineers to permanent deployment organizations of 20 to more than 100. How those teams are organised is in how FDE teams are actually structured. Hiring a permanent senior FDE into one takes six to nine months.

Figure 1. Five FDE pay figures measure five different things: advertised salary, posted base, total pay and fully loaded cost.

What is the forward deployed engineer salary in 2026?

As of October 2026, the median posted base is $200K across the 389 postings in Plank's census that disclose pay, Indeed's average across about 1.7k postings is $179,916, and Levels.fyi's US median total compensation is $220K. They differ because they measure different things: a posted base midpoint, an average across job ads over 36 months, and self-reported pay including equity.

Plank's census breaks the posted base down three ways, as of 18 October 2026:

Cut

Lower end

Upper end

Company stage

Seed: $150K median

Frontier labs: $243K median (Series B: $235K)

Geography

Heartland and Sun Belt: $175K median

Coastal hubs: $202K median

Industry

Industrial AI: $148K median

Foundation-model labs: $250K median

Levels.fyi's spread shows what equity adds at the top. Its US median total compensation is $220K, the 75th percentile is $300K and the 90th is $362K, as of 19 October 2026. Lightcast's median advertised salary, reported by Fortune on 3 September 2026, was more than $188K, against about $145K for a traditional software engineer. That gap is the FDE premium as Lightcast measures it.

The pay mix leans to base. Of Bloomberry's 1,000 postings, 70% mentioned equity, 8% mentioned on-target earnings and none carried a sales quota. Insight Partners' panel recommends exactly that: a base-heavy package, because enterprise deployments slip for reasons outside the engineer's control, and no clean market comparable exists yet.

What does a forward deployed engineer cost to employ?

Insight Partners' July 2026 Forward Deployed Engineers report puts the average fully loaded cost of a permanent FDE at $200K to $350K a year (p.24), drawing on Levels.fyi, Glassdoor and 2026 FDE compensation surveys. Fully loaded adds benefits, payroll taxes and overhead to pay, so it answers a different question from any salary figure above.

Perspective AI's stage table, published 14 May 2026, puts all-in year-one cost per FDE at $200K to $250K at seed, $275K to $350K at Series A, $350K to $450K at Series B and $450K to $550K or more at Series C and later. The table doesn't say whether recruiting is included. Hiring takes six to nine months per permanent senior seat, and that time is a cost the annual figures don't carry.

Renting is the other route. A.Team's rate is about $25K a month for a senior builder, fully loaded. A monthly rate and an annual employment cost aren't the same unit, and which is cheaper depends on how long the work runs and how steady it is. The build, rent or partner guide works through those dependencies, and FDE as a service compares the four ways vendors get engineers to their customers.

What do FDE job postings ask for?

Python first, then TypeScript and AI-agent experience, and almost never a quota. Bloomberry's analysis of 1,000 postings from Revealera data is the largest public skills breakdown; its data covers January to October 2025, so it's the oldest figure on this page.

AI agents

By role content, 60% of the postings described an embedded builder, 30% a sales engineer under a newer title and 10% an internal-tools role. If that split still holds, part of every posting count above is a relabelled role.

How we update this page

We re-check every figure each quarter, in the first two weeks of January, April, July and October. This edition is dated 19 October 2026, and the next refresh is January 2027.

  • What gets in. A figure we can open at its source on the day of the refresh, shown with the source's own date. Reports we hold a copy of are cited by page. Figures we can't open, including widely repeated ones, stay off.
  • When sources disagree. We show both and say what each measures. We don't average them or pick a winner.
  • Our own numbers. A.Team's figures (time to hire, the monthly rate for a rented senior builder, time to interview) are labelled as ours and never mixed into a market average.
  • Change log. 19 October 2026: first edition.

What to do next

If you're budgeting a permanent hire, plan on the fully loaded range and the six-to-nine-month search, and use posted base only for the offer itself. If you're writing the job description, the postings table tells you what the market will expect to see, and the FDE definition guide tells you what to screen for underneath the title. If the decision is whether to build, rent or partner, start with when to hire forward deployed engineers.

When the backlog won't wait six to nine months, A.Team puts 1 to 3 named and priced senior engineers in front of you to interview in 3 to 5 business days, at about $25K a month for a senior builder, fully loaded, working under your badge and your team's direction.
