Marketing-mix modeling is, by any reasonable measure, a good idea. You want to know which channels are actually driving incremental revenue, not just correlating with purchases that would have happened anyway. You want to allocate budget based on causal evidence rather than platform-reported ROAS. You want to be able to answer your CFO's question about marketing's contribution to enterprise value with something more credible than last-click attribution.

MMM does all of that. The problem is the cadence. A traditional MMM study is a quarterly or annual exercise. You hire an econometrics firm, they spend weeks or months building and calibrating the model on your historical data, and you receive results that tell you how last year's media mix performed. By the time the model runs, the market has moved. The findings inform next year's planning, which is based on a model of a market that no longer exists.

This is not a critique of MMM as a methodology. It is a description of the gap between the cadence MMM runs at and the cadence the market moves at. That gap is where budget gets wasted, where opportunities get missed, and where the CFO's confidence in marketing's measurement credibility continues to erode.

The question is not whether to do MMM. The question is what you do in the eleven months between when your annual model runs and when the next one does.

The correlation trap MMM was designed to solve

To understand what continuous attribution adds, it helps to understand what MMM solved in the first place.

Most digital attribution runs on last-click or multi-touch models. These models observe that a customer who saw your ad then made a purchase, and they attribute credit to that ad. But even a well-constructed annual MMM study has a structural limitation: it tells you about the past at a resolution too coarse to act on in real time. It tells you that TV drove 22% of incremental sales last year. It does not tell you that TV is underperforming in the Southeast this week while CTV inventory is still affordable. The model answers the strategic allocation question. It does not answer the in-flight optimization question.

What continuous attribution actually means

The shift from periodic to continuous attribution is not a matter of running the same MMM model more frequently. It's a different architecture.

How the causal logic stays intact

The reasonable objection to continuous attribution is that it sacrifices the causal rigor that makes MMM valuable. If you are updating the model weekly on streaming data, are you really measuring causation, or are you back to sophisticated correlation?

This is a fair concern and worth answering directly.
